Screen Music & Sound Studies Online

SMSS Online is a web-based resource for researchers concerned with various aspects of music and sound in screen-based media (including film, video, DVD, games and other interactive forms).

The resource was established by researchers from Macquarie University (Sydney) and Southern Cross University (Lismore) in 2008 to encourage and facilitate international cooperation and collaboration in screen music and sound studies.

The facility is currently under development and suggestions and/or proposals for collaborations are welcome.

SMSS also has an associated email discussion list: SMSSN.

Genre, Music and Sound

Genre, Music and Sound (edited by Mark Evans) addresses all areas of film sound across five separate genres: horror, animation, erotica, comedy and fantasy. While certain filmic genres, namely musicals and westerns, have received careful attention, other popularist genres have not been exposed to similar scrutiny. The volumes in this series highlight the centrality of sound in creating the very genre classifications widely used to market contemporary cinema.

Through a combination of theoretical ruminations, historical surveys and key case studies, the nuances particular to the sound of each genre are thoroughly explored. Such analyses will lead to greater possibilities for comparative research across genres in the future.

Those people interested in contributing to future volumes should email 300 word abstracts to Mark Evans mark.evans [at] mq.edu.au.
